Pahalgam Terror Attack

 On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack occurred in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Indian-administered Kashmir. Five armed militants opened fire on tourists, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuring over 20 others. This incident is considered the deadliest attack on civilians in the region since the 2008 Mumbai attacks .

Details of the Attack

• Location and Timing: The assault took place around 2:50 PM IST in Baisaran Valley, approximately 5 kilometers from Pahalgam. The area is known for its scenic beauty and is often referred to as "mini-Switzerland" .​

• Method of Attack: The assailants, armed with AK-47s and M4 carbines, emerged from nearby forests and began shooting at close range. Witnesses reported that the gunmen targeted male tourists, sparing women, and in some cases, asked victims to recite Islamic verses to identify non-Muslims .​

• Casualties: Among the deceased were 24 Indian nationals from various states, one local resident from Jammu and Kashmir, and one tourist from Nepal. The victims included government officials, such as officers from the Indian Air Force and Navy, and an Intelligence Bureau official 

Perpetrators and Motive

• Claim of Responsibility: The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), initially claimed responsibility, citing opposition to Indian government policies allowing non-locals to settle in Kashmir. However, TRF later retracted their claim, alleging a communications breach and accusing Indian intelligence of involvement .​

• Investigation: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is examining entry and exit points in the region to determine the attackers' modus operandi. As of now, no arrests have been reported in connection with this specific attack .​

Aftermath and Reactions

• Government Response: Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack as a "heinous act" and vowed justice for the victims. In response, India closed its border with Pakistan, expelled Pakistani diplomats, and suspended the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan denied involvement and retaliated by suspending the Simla Agreement, restricting trade, and closing its airspace

• International Condemnation: Leaders worldwide, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and former President Donald Trump, expressed condolences and support for India. The attack coincided with Vice President Vance's visit to India, drawing parallels to the 2000 Chittisinghpura massacre during President Bill Clinton's visit .​
